Shiatsu in Utrecht
Nurturing the body, mind, and spirit.
What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of massage therapy originally from Japan and based on Chinese medicine. It engages the body, mind and spirit of the receiver and giver, it provides deep relaxation and helps restore inner balance and flow.
As a holistic therapy, a shiatsu treatment takes into consideration the person’s history, lifestyle, and current state of mind. Shiatsu enables you to reconnect with your body, calm your mind and feel more aligned. It provides deep mental and physical relaxation, which strengthens your resilience and vitality.
The basic principle of Shiatsu is the study of Ki, the vital energy that initiates movement in the body. The condition of the Ki reflects how well our body, emotions and thoughts are functioning. The aim of a shiatsu treatment is to remind the body of its healing power and help to balance energy and stimulate circulation, through working with acupuncture pressure points in the body.

The Shiatsu session
The Shiatsu session begins with a 15-minute intake to best understand your needs and tailor the treatment. Shiatsu is performed on a clothed body, with gentle pressure applied along specific meridians and acupuncture points. The treatment includes sometimes light stretches and mobilisation to increase circulation. The treatment takes place on a warm futon (Japanese mat) and uses pillows to support the body in a comfortable and proper alignment.
Before or after the massage, you will also learn a simple stretch or self-massage technique to carry the benefits of Shiatsu into your daily life.
The Shiatsu treatment takes place in Charlotte’s practice in Utrecht. It lasts for 90 minutes, including 20 15 min intake, a 60 min massage and 10 min breathing or self massage tips.

Shiatsu and Pregnancy
Traditional Chinese medicine views pregnancy as a major transition and gateway moment in life. Many changes occur in a short period of time, which can be unsettling on both a physical and emotional level. Shiatsu accompanies parents through this fundamental life transition.
I listen and support parents, and invite them to share the emotions, fears and changes that appear in the body. A sense of peace, safety and deeper connection with yourself and the baby. The body listens, adapts and tensions tend to disappear.
The First Trimester
I use very soft touch during the first trimester to provide relaxation and support the implantation, work on specific meridians to ease nausea and sustain the energy of the blood. A Shiatsu treatment may ease deeper breathing and provide deep relaxation.
Second and Third Trimester
During pregnancy the body is in a constant state of adaptation and change. The mind also needs space and time to evolve and process this life transition. Shiatsu supports the mild physical and emotional complaints you may encounter during your pregnancy.
Shiatsu is targeted at reliefing any pregnancy discomfort, such as lower back pain, diaphragm pain, tensed upper back. It may supprt the release fluid retention, work on specific meridians to support gastric reflux, sleeping disorder or anxiety. Including a massage of the womb to help you connect with your baby.

Shiatsu after Birth
Shiatsu helps to restore energy and emotional balance as you navigate the changes of new motherhood. Shiatsu encourages self-care and promotes relaxation, allowing you to embrace and nurture your body’s transformation. Each session is tailored to your unique needs, helping you regain strength, confidence, and a renewed sense of well-being.
We recommend to wait at least 6 weeks before coming to the practice.
Shiatsu and Fertility
In addition to getting the right nutrition and medical advice, Shiatsu prepares your body for carrying life, supporting regulation of hormones and emotions. It can also be of great help for people starting IVF and would like to be supported in this, often both physicalkly and emotionally, challenging process.
Shiatsu & Loss and Miscarriage
Shiatsu offers gentle support for those healing after a miscarriage. It helps address both the emotional and physical aspects of recovery by promoting emotional balance, releasing grief, and providing comfort during a difficult time. The treatment also supports the body’s hormonal regulation and helps restore balance to the reproductive system, aiding in physical recovery.

Charlotte Lafitte
I’m a shiatsu therapist & Do-In teacher based in Utrecht. Originally from France, I discovered Shiatsu while living in Japan. During this time, I experienced a profound shift—navigating the transition from student life to adulthood and immersing myself in a new culture. My practice of Karate (Yutenkai) deepened my understanding of the connection between body, mind, and spirit. It was through the guidance of an inspiring woman who shared her passion for Shiatsu that I found a path to greater alignment with myself.
In 2019, The Netherlands offered me the opportunity to combine studying and corporate work. I hold an HBO-level degree in Shiatsu from the Iokai Shiatsu School (2019-2023) and am continually deepening my practice, particularly focusing on how Shiatsu can support fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum care under the guidance of Suzanne Yates (2023–ongoing).
In my free time, I enjoy mindful movement, dancing, walking, and contemplating the beauty of trees. But my true passion lies in the art of mindful touch. I believe that a touch given with care and intention creates a safe space where both body and mind can deeply relax and heal.
